A federal judge has temporarily stalled the deportation of a Salvadoran woman who was taken into custody by ICE agents.

Agents detained Roxana Santos on January 8 during settlement negotiations for a civil rights suit that she won against the Frederick County Maryland Sheriff’s Office.

U.S. District Judge Catherine Blake issued a temporary restraining order to halt efforts to deport santos. The restraining order will remain while her attorney’s negotiate damages for her unlawful arrest back in 2008.

“That order is valid for a period of ten days. So hopefully that will give us time to litigate the underlying habeus petition,” said Nicholas Katz, Santo’s attorney. “And if not, that order can potentially be extended for another short period of time.”

Santos is currently being detained by ICE. Attorneys continue to petition for her release. Another settlement negotiation is expected in Feburary.
