A Smithsburg home was almost entirely burnt to the ground after an early morning fire Wednesday.

Frederick and Washington County firefighters responded to the home along the 14400 block of Ridenour road at about 3:20 a.m. after neighbors called in about a fire.

It took a team of 20 firefighters about 25 minutes to completely extinguish the flames that destroyed the single-family home.

Firefighters did have to call in for the tanker task force due to a limited water supply.

Officials say no one was inside the structure during the fire.

“The homeowner did show up afterwards and confirmed that the house was vacant. [The Frederick County Fire Marshall’s Office] estimate the damage to be about $75,000, and that’s [including] the house and its contents,” explained Battalion Chief Troy Grossnickle.

The Frederick County Fire Marshall is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
