Washington County is looking to improve the safety of students.

County Commissioner Wayne Keefer brought the idea to form a school safety task force before the Washington County Board of Commissioners.

“As we began our meeting last week, our sister county, Saint Mary’s County, was experiencing a school shooting. That just renewed the importance of protecting our schools here in Washington County,” Keefer said.

Keefer said that more money needs to go into school resource officers before the budget cycles ends for Fiscal Year 2019.

“I think now is the time to incorporate that into the budget,” Keefer said.

As of Wednesday, a meeting has been set in the coming days for the county staff, the commissioners along with members of Washington County Public Schools and law enforcement to get together to start the conversation on what may be possible.

Keefer’s comments were supported by fellow Commissioner Jeff Cline.

“Budgets are tight. There are things that we want and things that we need. School safety is something we need. We need to find the ability to have a short-term, mid-term, long-term plan for school safety,” Cline said on Wednesday.
