PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — The Prince George’s County police department said a teenage girl was shot in Riverdale on Thursday evening. She is in critical condition.
“We want better neighborhoods. we want safer neighborhoods. we want to bring resolution to a young person, a young teen being shot, then we’re asking people to come forward,” said Chief Malik Aziz with the Prince George’s County Police Department.
Police said that at about 5:40 p.m., they were dispatched to the 6800 block of Riverdale Road for a reported shooting.
When they arrived at the scene, they found a girl who had been shot. She was taken to the hospital.
“She was outside, she was not in an apartment but when you’re shooting recklessly, aimlessly then whatever goal you’re trying to accomplish, you tend to shoot up the vehicles that are parked here, and it some of the apartments out here,” said Aziz.
This comes during a time Prince George’s County and surrounding areas are seeing a rise in gun violence across communities. The community along with police say it’s “getting out of hand.”
“We’ve seen an escalation of gun violence, the proliferation of guns, quick attitudes, and quickness to resolve situations with violence. So we’re past the point that its getting out of hand, It’s gotten out of hand. We all need to join together to address this violence, and the violence is unacceptable, it’s not necessary but we need to move past the talk and get to the action,” said Aziz.
