UPDATE, Sept. 19, 1:45 p.m. — Police said as a result of the fights, four children were charged with Assault. A 19-year-old man from Germantown, Md. faces five charges: Second Degree Assault, Mutual Affray, Disorderly Conduct, Intoxicated Endanger, and Failure to Obey Lawful Order.

The charges were the result of fights that took place off of the football field as people were leaving.  

Gaithersburg and Northwest high schools and Montgomery County Public Schools security will be conducting an administrative review regarding students and staff involved in the fighting on the field during the game.

Police said they were at Gaithersburg High School after a fight broke out a game between its football team and Northwest High School’s team. The fight started around 8:25 p.m. Police said as officers were responding, other fights started.

One staff member was injured in the altercations. One other person was treated for cuts. A police officer was assaulted but not injured.

Officers from the Gaithersburg Police Department and the Montgomery County Department of Police were there Friday night. Officers Officers took people into custody, and the Gaithersburg Police Department said those people would be charged accordingly.

The school district put out a statement Saturday:

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) strongly condemns the abhorrent and unacceptable behavior that occured at the football game last night – on Friday, September 16, 2022 – between Northwest and Gaithersburg at Gaithersburg High School.  The district is swiftly moving to develop and implement enhanced measures for safety at any athletic event and will communicate those to our community in the coming days.

As agreed upon by MCPS and both schools, all football operations at those two schools will be suspended temporarily, to assist in the ongoing investigation. The district will pursue disciplinary actions against any individuals who are found to have participated in this large altercation, while working to bring communities together around the importance of upholding safe and respectful environments.
