A new program at Handley Regional Library in Winchester is trying to preserve the untold stories of African American residents.

Archivists at the library are trying to collect images and information about Winchester and Frederick County African American communities to be preserved digitally in the archives. Residents are asked to bring in the photos to be scanned into the system, which will then allow the photos to be viewed online. 

“When the archives started, we had very little on our African American community,” said archivist Becky Ebert. “We’re very pleased that that’s been able to grow and expand. And we just want to make sure people aren’t left out.”

Residents can bring photos any time the archives are open, but archivisits say if you bring photos in on April 27th, they can be scanned in and returned on the same day.
