Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP has taken on 24 cases from counties and cities in Virginia that are fighting back against the opioid epidemic.

This week, Arlington County, Fauquier County, and Prince William County joined that list. Alexandria was the first about a year ago.

Andrew Miller is the senior litigation counsel at Sanford Heisler Sharp. “What we’re trying to do is stop the grossly unsafe and irresponsible levels of advertising, promotion, distribution, [and] reimbursement that has been happening with so many of these drugs in a way that has just been totally out of control,” said Miller.

Sanford Heisler Sharp is suing more than 15 drug companies, which they say hold specific responsibility for creating the state’s opioid epidemic. Pharmacy benefits managers, who decide which drugs are reimbursed under insurance plans, are also being sued for their role — Miller says this is a first in the country.
