Saturday in Ashburn, Old Ox Brewery hosted the inaugural Hockey in July Festival in support of getting disabled veterans on the ice.

The event benefited Capital Beltway Warriors, a nonprofit that raises funds to support disabled veterans’ ice hockey in the Northern Virginia region. The team’s players range in age from their twenties to their sixties. The nonprofit’s board of directors is made up of veterans themselves.

“When we come together as a group you see that bonding, that comradery, those similar experiences,” said David J. Dixon Jr., president and executive director of Capital Beltway Warriors, “It almost becomes therapeutic because it’s like you feel like you’re home again.”

The team participates in two national games a year.
