The longest indoor ski slope in North America may be coming to Fairfax County…even more unusual is its proposed location: the inactive landfill beside I-95.

Two years ago, Virginia-based holding company Alpine-X presented Fairfax County with its proposed recreational destination property, which includes skiing and snowboarding accommodations and a 100-room luxury hotel; all on top of the landfill that’s been inactive since the 1990s.

A gravity-powered mountain coaster and a gondola will bring tourists from the facility to Occoquan Regional Park.

“The views from the top of the landfill are unbelievable and nobody can see them,” said Supervisor Pat Herrity of Fairfax County’s Springfield District. “It’s one of the highest points in Fairfax County; beautiful views of the Occoquan and Potomac River, and our residents will finally get to enjoy that.”

The county has accepted the proposal. It’s giving other companies until November of this year to submit competing proposals.
