While most people give up something for Lent, Saint Ann Roman Catholic Church in Arlington is teaching kids to give back.

Every Thursday during Lent, kids from Saint Ann Catholic School come together and pack sandwiches for the area’s needy at the Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter.
Each week the kids make around 300 sandwiches for about an hour. It’s a tradition that the church has been doing for decades. An event organizer says it teaches kids a lot about helping others.

“{It’s} Certainly a hope that they will go forth wherever they go. To see people that are in need and always be helpful in whatever way that is, whether that’s offering a bottle of water to someone on the street or just even a smile, and a hello,” said Kate Perryman, event organizer.

The last sandwich making event will take place Thursday, April 4.
