WINCHESTER, Va. (WDVM) — The Winchester Police Department arrested and charged three people in connection with a fatal home invasion from December 2018 in which Jerry Wayne Reid Jr., 40, was shot and killed.

Police Chief John Piper and Commonwealth’s Attorney Marc Abrams announced the details in a joint press conference at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Abrams identified the suspects in custody as Edward Nathaniel Bell Jr., 22; Ronald Johnson, 26; and Xavian Bell, 21.

All three were indicted with first degree murder, burglary with firearm, conspiracy to commit burglary, two counts of attempted robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Edward was additionally charged with convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Police said the shooting happened just before 11 p.m. on Sunday, December 23 on the 300 block of Smithfield Avenue. According to police, Reid was shot multiple times, notably in the chest, the stomach, and in the arm. Police say he was pronounced dead after being taken to Winchester Medical Center.

The three suspects are held at the Northwest Regional Adult Detention Center without bond. According to Abrams, additional charges against other individuals are pending.

The Winchester Police Department typically does not hold press briefings of this nature. And similarly, the fact that the chief will not take questions is also out of the ordinary for a department that is typically very transparent.
