ANNANDALE, Va. (DC News Now) — A hit and run in Annandale on Sunday evening left one woman dead.
Police said the crash happened at Annandale Road and Maple Place just before 8 p.m. The victim was a pedestrian who was crossing the street, which did not have a crosswalk in the area when she was hit by a vehicle, whose driver was operating it at a low speed.
In an update on Monday, Fairfax County Police said they have not released the victim’s name because they have not located her family.
Maria Avelar, a woman who works at a laundromat just feet away from the crash site, said the woman spent lots of time there and was quiet, but always polite and nice.
“I feel really bad because I knew her,” Avelar said. “I saw her Saturday night when I left and [Sunday] morning when I came back she was still here.”
She continued, “[She’s] someone’s family member. We spent a lot of time in here, and it hurts knowing that she’s not here anymore.”
Police said that a small white SUV or sedan was possibly involved in the crash. Anyone with any information is asked to call 911.
This is the 14th pedestrian-related fatality in Fairfax County in 2022. There were 10 reported through the first eight months of 2021
