WASHINGTON (WDVM) — D.C. Metropolitan Police confirmed that two officers who had responded to the January Capitol riot had died to suicide in the past month. D.C. Metropolitan Police Officer Gunther Hashida died last week, and Officer Kyle DeFreytag died on July 10.

An email statement from the Metropolitan Police Department about Hashida’s death said, “We are grieving as a Department as our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Hashida’s family and friends.”

A GoFundMe to raise money for Hashida’s memorial stated that he died on July 29. It said that Hashida “worked to serve and protect the public” while with the Metropolitan Police Department. He joined MPD in May 2003. Officer DeFreytag had joined the Department in November 2016.

Hashida left behind a wife, a sister and three children.
