It’s officially the giving season, and the two local organizations came together to spread some holiday cheer.
Hagerstown’s FedEx partnered with Maryland Food Bank’s Western Branch to provide 50,000 holiday meals for families in need.
“It’s something we look forward to every year to do our part to help out,” said Richard Depietress, Senior Manager, FedEx.
For many, the season filled with holiday cheer is a reminder of the struggle to make ends meet.
But, this event will prevent that for hundreds of local residents.
“It’s a way of giving back and leaving no family hungry during this season,” said Depietress.
FedEx employees volunteered at the “Pack to Give Back Local” event to help prepare meal bags.
Each one was filled with traditional holiday items like cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and stuffing.
According to the food bank, there are over 47,000 people in Western Maryland considered to be food insecure, and among those, 20,000 are children.
“It’s not a holiday when you’re hungry, so we’re thrilled to be able to have these events and do what we can do to make the holiday better for those that need it,” said Frank Ducey, Program Manager, Maryland Food Bank’s Western Branch.
Friday’s volunteers packed a total of 560 bag, each one filled with enough food to feed a family of four.
Food bank staff said there’s still many opportunities to give.
