Since 1974, the Mormon Temple in Kensington has drawn countless worshippers and visitors from around the DMV and beyond.

Now the famous temple is preparing to close for two years while safety renovations and other upgrades are being done.

When the temple does re-open 2020, it will be the first open house welcoming all community members since 1974.

The closure has led many local residents to ask what will become of the temple’s world famous annual Christmas light show.

“The festival of lights will continue with the renovation of the temple,” said Elder Kevin Calderwood. “That is a fan favorite. We have dignitaries from all over the world that look forward to that event because it is beautiful and colorful and it sits on this beautiful spot.”

According to church officials, more than 18,000 people passed through the temple doors to worship there annually.
