BURTONSVILLE, Md. (WDVM) – Paint Branch high school football star Octavian Smith Jr. signed with the University of Maryland on Wednesday morning.
“It’s going to be great. Look out for the Terps because the Coach [Mike] Locksley there, he has a vision and all the players there, they’ve bought in,” Smith told WDVM just moments after his signing. “The people he’s got coming on board have bought in and we’re all looking to change that program around.”
The four-star athlete chose the Terps over Boston College, Northwestern, Penn State and Virginia.
During the 2021 season, Smith led the Panthers to the 4A state quarterfinals. Smith started at quarterback in every game for Paint Branch and also returned kicks and punts. In the past, he has lined up at cornerback, wide receiver and running back. As a senior, he scored 22 total touchdowns. Smith was also named the 4A Montgomery County football player of the year by the county’s coaches.
“I’m gonna miss everything about this place from teachers to the field to everything. Everything that involves this school, it’s a great school,” Smith said. “Something that I’ll look back on is like the legacy that I was able to leave for myself, going from a nobody to become one of the best players in the state of Maryland. I felt like my whole motive, from the moment that I got here at Paint Branch was to have my name be one to remember and I think that I did that.”
WDVM featured Smith in November, you can read and view that story here.
